The Lead Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex systems that meet the PSL's operational needs. The role involves overseeing the entire lifecycle of system engineering, from requirement analysis to deployment and maintenance. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, excellent leadership skills, and a proven ability to lead teams in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Architecture:

  • Analyse and document system requirements, ensuring alignment with PSL’s goals.
  • Design scalable, reliable, and secure system architectures.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define system specifications and performance standards.

Implementation & Development:

  • Oversee system implementation, ensuring adherence to design and quality standards.
  • Lead teams in developing system prototypes and conducting system-level testing.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and developers.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Serve as a product ambassador internally and externally, effectively communicating product vision and goals.
  • Present product features and roadmaps to stakeholders and ensure alignment with business objectives.

Maintenance & Optimization:

  • Monitor system performance, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
  • Optimize existing systems to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
  • Ensure systems are compliant with security protocols and industry standards.

Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Act as a liaison between cross-functional teams, including developers, QA, and product managers.
  • Lead project planning, ensuring timely delivery of milestones and objectives.
  • Communicate technical solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and incorporate them into system design.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and drive initiatives to enhance system engineering practices.
  • Establish best practices and documentation for system engineering and operations.

Requirements

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 5 to 7+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in system architecture, design, and development.
  • Proficiency in system modelling tools and methodologies (e.g., UML, SysML).
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • In-depth knowledge of system security protocols, including firewalls, encryption, and authentication methods.
  • Knowledge of version control systems like Git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g., Python, Bash, Ansible).
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills to provide actionable feedback.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Local Context Understanding: Awareness of user behaviours, preferences, and challenges in Uganda.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification in systems engineering (e.g., INCOSE, CISSP, AWS Solutions Architect).
  • Experience with DevOps methodologies and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns and ITIL practices.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and project management tools.
