Bishop Stuart University (BSU) is a Faith-Based Christian University founded in 2002 by Ankole Diocese of the Church of Uganda. Role Context

The Lecturer in Chemistry teaches foundational and advanced chemistry courses, fostering scientific inquiry, critical thinking, experimental skills, and an appreciation for the molecular foundations of the natural world among students. Reports to the Head of Department, Science Education.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Doctoral Degree or Master’s Degree with 3 years teaching experience in Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, or a specialized field such as Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Biochemistry.
• Practical experience in chemical research, laboratory techniques, instrumentation, or fieldwork (e.g., environmental sampling or synthesis).

• Enthusiasm for chemistry and ability to inspire students through engaging, hands-on teaching and real-world demonstrations.
• Strong laboratory skills, including safe handling of chemicals, use of modern instrumentation (e.g., spectroscopy, chromatography), and adherence to rigorous safety protocols and hazard management.
• Alignment with Christian values, emphasizing ethical science, responsible stewardship of creation, integrity in research, and compassionate application of chemistry to address global challenges like clean water, and public health.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Teach undergraduate chemistry courses through lectures, discussions, tutorials, and laboratory sessions.
• Design and deliver laboratory practicals, including preparing reagents and materials, demonstrating techniques, supervising student experiments, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
• Develop syllabi, course materials, assessments (exams, lab reports, projects, presentations), and grade student work promptly with constructive feedback.
• Hold office hours, advise students academically, and mentor on research projects, internships, or career opportunities in chemical sciences and related industries.
• Incorporate ethical discussions, creation care principles (e.g., sustainable resource use), and real-world applications relevant to African contexts such as water purification, agricultural chemistry, medicinal compounds, and environmental remediation.
• Contribute to curriculum enhancement, program assessment, and integration of practical and employable skills (e.g., analytical techniques, data interpretation).
• Participate in departmental activities, such as seminars, committees, safety inspections, or outreach events promoting science education and public understanding of chemistry.
• Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated on chemical advancements, laboratory innovations, and pedagogical best practices.
• Ensure safe, inclusive laboratory and classroom environments that reflect university values of integrity, service, respect for life, and responsible care for God’s creation.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive community engagement strategy, including annual action plans integrated with the university’s research and innovation agenda.
• Identify community needs through assessments and facilitate the application of university innovations (teaching, agricultural technology, health solutions) via pilot projects and outreach programs.
• Build and sustain strategic partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, faith-based organizations, and local leaders to co-create impact-driven initiatives.
