JOB DETAILS:
EDUCATION, COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS REQUIRED
• Minimum of Diploma in Midwifery from a recognized institution and registration
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience
• High competency in area of practice with commitment to excellence in the practice of midwifery.
• Registered and possess a valid practicing license and certificate from the Nurses and Midwives council.

INDIVIDUAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY
• Provide comprehensive professional obstetric, gynecological and women’s health care to patients including identifying high-risk cases and providing corrective action, advice and/or referral.
• Carry out antenatal care with emphasis to identifying high risk cases and refer them to the doctors.
• Receive patients, register admissions and discharges.
• Provide Obstetrical emergency care and refer complicated cases to the Doctor.
• Provide comprehensive care to mothers during pregnancy with emphasis prevention of infection and successful breastfeeding and infant nutrition.
• Provide comprehensive care to mothers during pregnancy with emphasis on identifying high risk cases and refer them to Doctors.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary providers to ensure that the patient is getting the best in comprehensive women and infant health care
• Participate in all activities necessary to implement the multidisciplinary team approach to the care of women and infants (including nutritional counseling, breastfeeding support, health education, family planning and other counseling as required under the circumstances, monitoring and appropriate reporting of the health conditions of women and babies, etc.).
• Responsible for maintaining the integrity of Hospital operations within the midwife function, quality assurance, safe environment and infection control standards
• Assist in expanding and enhancing women and infant health services provided at the Hospital by participating in outreach, community screenings and conducting health education sessions
• Responsible for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, & behaviors necessary to provide superior service to patients
• Contribute to Life link Hospital institutional knowledge by staying current on issues in the health care field and sharing knowledge as required with other staff.
• Participate in Primary Health Care and Continuous professional development activities.
• Perform administrative duties as required such as registration of birth notifications, compile reproductive/child health data and other required reports, case management, records maintenance and patient surveys to maintain quality assurance.
• Compile daily ward reports and hand over to in-coming shift.
• Maintain personal contact with patients, take note of their complaints, carry out corrective measures and escalate for further action as necessary
• Manage patients with confidentiality and adherence to professional code of conduct, hospital policies and procedures and best practices in health care
• Requisition and maintain accurate accounts for medical supplies.
• Participate in Immunization activities.
• To be flexible, and respectful to fellow staff and team leaders.
• Expected to work any shift allocated to them.

LABOUR SUIT EXPECTATIONS
• Ensure that the environment is clean and tidy to include walls, floor, coaches and linen before and after any procedure.
• Confirm that there is adequate refill of supplies.
• Ensure sterility of instruments and packs are autoclaved
• Maintain aseptic technique in all procedures.
• Use material and solutions sparingly without compromising the care.
• Attend to patients promptly and position them comfortably.
• Always explain to the patients the procedure to be carried out and give reassurance.
• Ensure that the babies are properly labeled with identification tags.
• Provide comprehensive care to mothers during labour with emphasis on keeping proper records, use of drugs and prevention of complication to mothers and babies.
• Hand over at every change of shift must be ensured.

WARD MIDWIFE
In case you are allocated to the inpatient wards, you are expected to:
• Pay much attention to the inpatients and expected to be found in the nurses station or in the maternity room.
• To keep your work station well arranged with all the necessary equipment to avoid unnecessary movement.
• Have proper knowledge and information about all the inpatient handed over to you by reading the file thoroughly well.
• Equipment should be handed over to the incoming nurse and signed for E.g., stethoscope, B/P machines, thermometer etc. and should be checked at the beginning of every shift to ensure they are in good working order at all times.
• Give the proper nursing care, take and document vital observations.
• To attend all ward rounds with the doctors and implement the instructions given.
• Make sure the Laboratory tests samples are taken off and radiological tests done.
• Timely giving of medication is expected at all times.
• In case the patient condition changes, you should inform the doctor immediately.
• A physical hand over should be done at every change of shift and the incoming nurse should introduce themselves by names to the patient.
• Document everything that has happened to the patient, vitals and changes in the treatment during your shift and a proper report written the inpatient report book and in the patient file.
• Report any incidents that have happened during your shift.
• Ensure that patient documents are handled in a confidential way.
• To perform any other duties as maybe assigned from time to time.
