Food for the Hungry (FH/U) is a Christian international relief and development organization that has been working in Uganda since 1989. FH is currently operating programs in Asia, Latin America and Africa with support offices in the UK, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, United States of America and Japan. FH’s primary goal is to end all forms of poverty World-wide. In Uganda, FH is operational in the Districts of Adjumani, Kitgum, Lamwo, Kole, Kween, Mbale, Namutumba and Amudat Districts implementing programs in four main sectors of Education; Food Security and Livelihoods; Health/Nutrition and Disaster Risk Reduction; with the Head office located in Kampala.
Job Summary:
The Project Officer provides lead and quality assurance in the design, implementation, and evaluation of non-infrastructure components of Sanitation and Hygiene programs in both Development and Humanitarian intervention. The role is central to driving community and schools lead behavior change in ensuring that FH Uganda’s WASH software interventions are evidence-based, innovative, and aligned with national, international, and organizational standards. The Project Officer design, implement and monitor innovative strategies focused on community and institutional mobilization, capacity building, and participatory and sustainable learning to transform climate resilience sanitation and hygiene practices at the households and institutional levels to enhance community ownership, stakeholder collaboration, and contribute to donor engagement and resource mobilization to achieve sustainable impact.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
As the Project Officer- Sanitation and Hygiene your overall responsibilities will be (JDs Key Result Areas):
- Technical Support and Quality Assurance
- Program Development, Reporting, and Learning
- Coordination, Representation, and Advocacy
- Capacity Strengthening
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, Public Health, Social Sciences, Social Works, Development Studies, Public Administration, Community Development or related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in WASH Software’s programming and technical design and implementation of sanitation and hygiene approaches with 2 years in high risks environment/hard to reach locations.
- Proven expertise in designing and managing large-scale sanitation and hygiene promotions projects in both development and humanitarian settings.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data for decision-making and program improvement.
- Demonstrated experience in staff and community training, facilitation, and mentorship.
- Technical & Interpersonal Skills.
- Strong knowledge of WASH sector standards, government policies, and donor compliance frameworks (UNICEF, USAID, EU, UN agencies, World Bank etc).
- Proficiency in CLTS, PHAST, CLTS+, MBSIA, CHAST, PHASE software is essential.
- Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, donor engagement, and resource mobilization.
- Demonstrated experience in climate resilience, gender-integrated and inclusive WASH programming.
