Job Purpose

To support the management of criminal litigation cases involving the company by conducting case preparation, providing legal advice and ensuring compliance with applicable laws. The Legal Officer – Criminal plays a critical role in minimizing legal risks and protecting the company’s interests in criminal matters.

Impact: The position is vital in safeguarding the company against criminal liabilities by managing cases efficiently, providing accurate legal advice, and supporting the resolution of criminal matters. It contributes to maintaining the company’s reputation and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

Key Result Areas

  1. Assist in managing criminal cases involving the company, including theft, fraud and vandalism
  2. Support the preparation of case files and ensure timely submission of legal documents
  3. Collaborate with relevant departments to gather and review evidence related to criminal cases
  4. Conduct legal research to support case strategies and ensure compliance with criminal laws
  5. Provide legal advice on criminal law matters to ensure that company actions are legally compliant
  6. Assist in identifying and mitigating potential criminal legal risks
  7. Support the Senior Legal Officer in representing the company in criminal litigation and liaising with law enforcement agencies
  8. Prepare pleadings, affidavits and other necessary legal documents
  9. Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in handling criminal matters
  10. Maintain organized records of all criminal cases and prepare reports for management.

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Law School Certification).
  • Admission to the Bar as a licensed advocate

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of post-admission legal experience, with a focus on criminal litigation and case management.
  • Experience in handling cases involving theft, fraud, and vandalism is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with laws governing utilities or energy-related crimes is desirable

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of criminal law and legal procedures.
  • Proficiency in drafting pleadings, affidavits, and other legal documents.
  • Ability to conduct thorough legal research and analysis.
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and case management software.
