Responsibilities or duties
The Professor – Data Science shall report to the Dean, School of Science, Computing and Engineering and shall:
- Provide strategic academic leadership in Data Science education, research, innovation and postgraduate training.
- Lead the planning, development and continuous improvement of undergraduate and postgraduate Data Science programmes.
- Strengthen the University's research profile through internationally recognised scholarship, research collaborations and innovation.
- Mentor academic staff, postgraduate students and researchers while building sustainable research capacity within the Department.
- Promote data-driven innovation through strategic partnerships with industry, government and international institutions.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Dean or University Council.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide strategic leadership in Data Science education through excellence in teaching, research, innovation and postgraduate supervision; strengthen the University's competitiveness in data analytics and intelligent systems research; promote evidence-based decision-making through advanced data science; foster national and international collaborations; and contribute to solving societal and industrial challenges through data-driven innovation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate shall:
- Provide strategic leadership in the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of undergraduate and postgraduate Data Science programmes.
- Lead curriculum development, programme review and accreditation to ensure compliance with National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) requirements and international quality standards.
- Teach specialised undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Data Science and supervise Master's and PhD students to successful completion.
- Lead internationally recognised research programmes in Data Science, big data analytics, artificial intelligence and related computing disciplines.
- Publish consistently in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at leading international conferences.
- Secure and lead major competitive research grants, consultancy projects and multi-institutional research collaborations.
- Mentor Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers and early-career researchers in teaching, research, publication, grant writing and academic leadership.
- Promote innovation, technology transfer and commercialization of data-driven research and analytical solutions.
- Establish strategic partnerships with technology companies, financial institutions, government agencies, research institutions and international universities to support collaborative research, innovation and graduate employability.
- Provide leadership in departmental, School and University governance through committees, Senate, strategic planning and policy development.
- Promote the application of Data Science in healthcare, agriculture, finance, engineering, business, education, environmental management and public policy.
- Represent the University at national and international conferences, professional associations and Data Science forums.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the University Management.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Academic Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must possess:
- An earned PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
- A Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence or a related discipline.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant post-PhD academic and/or industry experience, including at least three (3) years at the rank of Associate Professor or its equivalent.
- A minimum of eight (8) peer-reviewed publications since promotion to Associate Professor, demonstrating sustained research productivity and international academic recognition.
- Successful supervision of at least two (2) PhD and five (5) Master's students to completion.
- Demonstrated success in securing and managing competitive research funding.
- Evidence of strategic academic leadership at departmental, faculty or institutional level.
- Provide strategic academic leadership in Data Science education, research, innovation and postgraduate training.
