Background

King Ceasor University (KCU) is a chartered private university located in Bunga, Kampala, committed to academic excellence, innovation, research, and quality assurance in higher education. The University is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the position of Senior Lecturer -- Law. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in legal education, teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, curriculum development, academic leadership, scholarly publication, innovation, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

The Senior Lecturer -- Law shall report to the Head of Department and shall:

  • Provide academic leadership in teaching, legal research and community engagement within the Department of Law.
  • Deliver high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate legal education through lectures, tutorials, seminars, moot court exercises and clinical legal instruction.
  • Promote excellence in research, scholarly publication, innovation and postgraduate supervision in law and related disciplines.
  • Mentor junior academic staff and law students while supporting curriculum development and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Contribute to departmental, Faculty and University governance through academic leadership and committee service.
  • Perform such other duties as may be delegated by the Head of Department, Dean or University Management.

Purpose of the Job

To contribute to excellence in legal education through high-quality teaching, research, innovation and community engagement; promote evidence-based and socially responsive legal scholarship; strengthen postgraduate legal education and supervision; enhance research productivity and scholarly publication; and support the achievement of the University's strategic objectives in teaching, research and service.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver high-quality lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate law students.
  • Design, review and continuously improve course content to ensure alignment with contemporary legal developments, accreditation requirements and industry practice.
  • Coordinate and supervise moot court exercises, legal clinics and practical legal training in collaboration with courts, chambers and relevant institutions.
  • Develop, administer and moderate examinations, coursework and other student assessment methods in accordance with University policies.
  • Supervise undergraduate research projects, LLM dissertations and other postgraduate legal research activities.
  • Conduct high-quality legal, socio-legal and interdisciplinary research that addresses national, regional and global legal and policy priorities.
  • Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed law journals and contribute to scholarly books, book chapters and conference proceedings.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary research projects, consultancies and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Mentor junior academic staff and postgraduate students in teaching, research, publication, grant writing and professional development.
  • Participate in curriculum development, programme review, accreditation and quality assurance activities within the Department and Faculty.
  • Integrate digital technologies, case-based learning and innovative teaching approaches into legal education.
  • Identify funding opportunities and prepare competitive research grant proposals to support teaching, research and innovation.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with courts, law firms, government agencies, professional bodies, development partners and international universities.
  • Participate in departmental, Faculty and University committees and contribute to academic planning and policy implementation.
  • Provide specialist legal expertise through consultancy, public lectures, legal aid initiatives and continuing legal education programmes.
  • Participate in community legal outreach programmes, access-to-justice initiatives and public legal education activities organised by the University.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and academic integrity.
  • Prepare periodic academic, research and administrative reports as required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the University Management.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold an earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Law or a relevant legal discipline from a recognised university.
  • Demonstrate excellence in university teaching, legal research and postgraduate supervision.
  • Possess a strong record of scholarly publication, curriculum development and academic leadership.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • An earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Law or a relevant legal discipline from a recognised university.
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honours) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice or equivalent professional legal training from a recognised institution.
  • Enrolment, or eligibility for enrolment, as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda or an equivalent recognised professional legal body will be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressive university teaching, research and legal scholarship experience at the rank of Lecturer or equivalent in a recognised higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate legal teaching and instruction.
  • A demonstrated record of at least three (3) peer-reviewed publications in reputable law journals or other outlets indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, HeinOnline or equivalent databases.
  • Successfully supervised at least two (2) postgraduate students to completion, including LLM and/or equivalent candidates.

Remuneration

Tenure

The Senior Lecturer -- Law shall hold office in accordance with the University's terms and conditions of service and subject to satisfactory performance.
