The Graduate Trainee – Switchgear Maintenance supports the switchgear maintenance team in conducting routine inspections, maintenance tasks, and repairs on electrical distribution equipment. The trainee will gain practical experience in maintaining and troubleshooting switchgear systems under close supervision, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of the network.

Impact

The trainee contributes to maintaining the efficiency and reliability of the distribution network by supporting scheduled maintenance and learning how to detect and address faults in switchgear systems. This role is designed to build foundational knowledge in electrical maintenance within a high-voltage operational environment.

Key Result Areas

  • Support the team in inspecting and maintaining switchgear components such as circuit breakers, isolators, and control panels.
  • Learn to use maintenance tools and safety equipment correctly under supervision.
  • Participate in troubleshooting processes by observing experienced engineers and assisting with basic diagnostic tests.
  • Assist in recording fault symptoms and following up on repairs.
  • Follow safety instructions and company procedures during all field activities.
  • Participate in safety briefings and use required PPE at all times.
  • Learn the importance of risk assessment and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Assist in preparing maintenance kits and reviewing equipment checklists.
  • Help organize tools, materials, and documentation before maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain accurate notes of activities carried out during training.
  • Support the team in updating maintenance logs and service records.
  • Attend technical training sessions on switchgear components, safety, and maintenance best practices.
  • Shadow experienced engineers to understand procedures and gain confidence in applying engineering principles.

Expected Output

  1. Active participation in routine switchgear inspections and minor maintenance tasks.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of maintenance processes, safety protocols, and tools.
  3. Completion of learning milestones as per the training plan.
  4. Accurate trainee logs and contributions to maintenance reporting.
  5. Improved readiness for independent work in switchgear maintenance by end of program.

Person Specifications

Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Must have graduated within the last three (3) yearsfrom a recognized institution
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, either from academic projects, lab work, or internships.

Experience:

  • No professional experience required.

Competencies:

  • Willingness to learn and work in field-based technical environments.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems and safety principles.
  • Good communication and team collaboration skills.
  • Attention to detail and a safety-conscious mindset.
  • Ability to follow instructions and show initiative in learning.
