JOB DETAILS:
LIVESTOCK OFFICERS (2 POSITIONS)
Position title: Livestock Officer
Reports to: Livelihoods program manager
Supervises: Livestock Agents
Duty Station: Iriir Field Officer (1) and Nakapiripirit Field Officer (1)
Job Purpose: Responsible for the implementation of livestock program activities
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Work closely with the project team to identify and pilot interventions that improve the productivity and competitiveness of the livestock industry.
- Collaborate with the livestock farmers, veterinary officers, extension services, private service providers, Veterinarians without Borders (VWB) and community animal health workers.
Monitor and evaluate all livestock related activities in target households.
- Coordinate, supervise, train and support livestock agents. _ Actively promote preservation and storage of local agricultural and industrial by-products.
- Support businesses and youth groups to develop new livestock-related businesses, such as feed block manufacture, apiculture, silage ' production, milk distribution, and fattening activities.
- Build a network with livestock health companies and service providers.
- Support initiatives to improve herd composition.
- Foster good calf management practices, including creep-feeding, milking frequency and calfpen hygiene. Identify, assess and develop networks and strategies for potential private, public and civil society sector partnerships.
- Conduct regular on-site field visits to monitor progress of activities
- Provide strategic measures for progress to maximize economic and social impacts of the programme to the community.
- Analyze project implementation strategies to identify constraints to success and provide timely recommendations.
- Develop work plans and reports as per reporting schedules.
- Keenly analyze project implementation strategies to identify constraints to program success and provide timely recommendations.
Requirements:
- Bachelors in Livestock production and management, Animal Production Technology and Management, Veterinary Medicine or a related field and 2 years’ experience with Non
- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in livestock production activities especially in a rural or pastoral community.
- A diploma in animal production and management and 3 years’ experience in livestock production programming.
- Excellent knowledge of livestock practices and animal husbandry as well as livestock economic possibilities.
- Very good understanding of government structures of production and livestock.
Networking skills with communities
- Very good knowledge of businesses in the value chain and communities
- Excellent supervisory, training, mentoring Skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Excellent communication skills
- Keen attention to detail, ability to follow procedures and meet deadlines and team work.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Proven skills in riding a motorcycle and possession of a valid riding license.
- Knowledge of local language (Nga'Karimojong) is an added advantage.
