About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Business Development Officer – Group Risk role will drive sustainable and profitable growth of the Group Risk portfolio by originating new business, deepening intermediary and client relationships, and delivering tailored group insurance solutions. The role ensures achievement of premium growth, retention, and portfolio quality objectives while maintaining alignment with underwriting standards, pricing discipline, risk management principles, and regulatory requirements.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Business Development & Revenue Growth
- Drive acquisition of new Group Risk business across corporates, SMEs, MFIs, SACCOs, associations, and affinity groups through targeted prospecting and strategic engagement.
- Develop and execute robust annual and quarterly sales strategies to deliver on premium, revenue, and portfolio growth targets.
- Build, manage, and continuously optimize a high-quality sales pipeline, ensuring disciplined tracking from lead generation to closure.
- Design and deliver compelling, client-centric proposals and presentations aligned with approved benefit structures, underwriting guidelines, and value propositions.
- Negotiate commercial terms within delegated authority, balancing competitiveness with profitability and long-term sustainability.
Client Relationship Management
- Establish and nurture strong, long-term relationships with corporate clients, trustees, HR leaders, and key decision-makers.
- Lead renewal negotiations and engagement strategies to drive retention, client satisfaction, and portfolio stability.
- Conduct structured client review meetings to evaluate scheme performance, claims experience, and service delivery standards.
- Oversee seamless onboarding of new schemes, ensuring effective transition to operations and administration teams.
- Proactively manage client concerns and escalations, coordinating with internal stakeholders to ensure timely and effective resolution.
Intermediary & Distribution Channel Management
- Build and sustain productive partnerships with brokers, agents, bancassurance channels, and other approved intermediaries.
- Provide technical and commercial support to intermediaries, including training, proposal development, and joint client engagements.
- Track and evaluate intermediary performance, ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles.
- Drive joint marketing initiatives and business development campaigns to strengthen market penetration and brand visibility.
Underwriting, Pricing & Proposal Coordination
- Collaborate closely with underwriting, actuarial, and reinsurance teams to ensure sound risk assessment and competitive pricing.
- Gather, analyse, and validate client data, including demographics, benefit structures, and claims history, to support accurate quotations.
- Ensure all proposals and negotiated terms are fully compliant with internal underwriting, pricing frameworks, and governance standards.
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally, managing client and intermediary expectations effectively.
Portfolio Management & Retention
- Actively monitor portfolio performance, focusing on premium growth, persistency, and loss ratios.
- Support scheme reviews and restructuring initiatives to enhance profitability and long-term sustainability.
- Identify early indicators of adverse performance and recommend timely corrective interventions.
- Work collaboratively with claims and underwriting teams to optimize overall scheme experience and outcomes.
Market Intelligence & Product Support
- Continuously track market trends, competitor activity, pricing dynamics, and evolving client needs within the Group Risk space.
- Provide actionable insights and client feedback to inform product development and enhancement initiatives.
- Support product launches, awareness campaigns, and corporate branding efforts.
- Contribute to innovation in benefit design and value-added services to strengthen market competitiveness.
Compliance, Reporting & Governance
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and governance frameworks in all business activities.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sales activities, client engagements, and pipeline data within CRM systems.
- Prepare timely and insightful reports on sales performance, pipeline health, renewals, and market developments.
- Support internal audits, compliance reviews, and regulatory engagements through accurate documentation and clear reporting.

Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Business Administration, Marketing, or a related discipline.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance
