Our client is a start-up institution focused on providing export financing solutions to support Ugandan exporters. As a data-driven financial services organization, It relies on numbers, trends, and insights to make informed decisions and manage risk.

Job Summary

Our client is seeking a numbers-driven, analytical, and curious Data Scientist Intern with a background in data analysis. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional (1–2 years’ experience) who enjoys working with data, identifying patterns, and supporting decision-making through insights.

The intern will support data collection, analysis, reporting, and basic modeling to help the company understand performance, client data, financial trends, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, clean, and organize data from various company systems
  • Analyze financial, operational, and client data to identify trends and patterns
  • Prepare regular reports and dashboards to support management decision-making
  • Support tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs)

2. Business & Financial Data Support

  • Assist in analyzing export financing data, client performance, and risk-related information
  • Support forecasting and basic financial or operational modeling
  • Help evaluate data related to loans, repayments, and client activities

3. Data Management

  • Maintain structured datasets and ensure data accuracy and consistency
  • Support data entry validation and data quality checks
  • Assist in developing simple data documentation and data flow processes

4. Tools & Systems

  • Use Excel, Google Sheets, or other data tools for analysis
  • Support use of BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or similar) where applicable
  • Work with IT or systems teams to improve data capture and reporting processes

5. Learning & Innovation

  • Research better ways to analyze or visualize company data
  • Support data-related projects as assigned
  • Continuously learn and apply new analytical techniques

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, or related field
  • Must have completed studies
  • 1–2 years of experience in data analysis, reporting, or a similar numbers-focused role (internships included)

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in Excel / Google Sheets (formulas, pivot tables, data analysis)
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis concepts (trends, averages, forecasting, etc.)
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar) is an advantage
  • Basic understanding of databases or SQL is an added advantage
  • Comfortable working with large sets of numbers and data

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills
  • Detail-oriented and accurate
  • Curious, willing to learn, and proactive
  • Able to explain numbers in a simple and clear way
  • Comfortable working in a start-up environment with evolving systems
