About the Role
The Digital Content Strategist shall work to redefine and expand HOT’s brand awareness and visibility in the region. The role will be responsible for developing and implementing engagement, communications and digital campaigns including marketing materials that serve the needs of our target audiences in the region. You shall also support media relations in the Eastern & Southern Africa region. You will be tasked with shaping our digital strategies and crafting compelling messages to encourage the adoption and use of open map data in the region.

You will serve a culturally and geographically distributed team of managers and associates coaching and supporting them to compile and gather high quality content to communicate their work; including how to use digital messaging to influence change within communities and communicate project results in the region. Through the results of your work, you will amplify community voices, raise awareness of our mission and impact across the region.

You will manage engagement and reach across all our channels: social media, television, radio/podcast, print and online media and targeted engagement of our key audiences.

Responsibilities
Digital Communications and Engagement.

• Develop, refine and own the ESA Hub Regional digital content and branding- both at a high level and tailored to specific audiences served by the Hub.
• Increase engagement across our key audiences through iterative and agile methodologies, using analytics to make informed decisions.
• Oversee all regional communication channels, social media, and other digital collateral (newsletters, ads, promotional materials, etc) including the Hub Landing Page on HOT’s website.
• Develop and maintain a central repository or knowledge base for fundraising-related resources, such as project briefs, case studies and lessons learnt.
• Ensure content coordination, work closely with project and programme leads to suggest content, provide insight on which story angles and platforms will be most effective for different target audiences, and advise projects on forthcoming opportunities and help generate ideas for strategic new content. Produce, curate, edit, proofread, and aggregate content and commission translations where appropriate.
• Create a streamlined digital presence across channels and plans for the year and beyond, in alignment with Regional Strategic Priorities.
• Explore a media strategy, pitching stories to national and regional press outlets and industry leaders for improved visibility.
• Oversee relationships with external professional contractors (videographers, photographers, etc.)
• Prepare and/or edit features, a monthly newsletter, blogs, press materials, visual materials، social media content and Q&A documents.
• Engage with communities, partners and donors in communications activities.
• Support the creation of HOT’s Annual Report, including engaging core audiences, soliciting materials from project staff and editing content and images.
• Identify training needs within the organization related to communication skills. Develop and deliver training programs or workshops to build capacity in effective communication practices.
• Assist with the development of marketing/communications materials and other information resources.
• Digital Campaigns + Fundraising Strategy.
• Build a digital, multi-year fundraising communications strategy together with the Fundraising Development Lead.
• Design strategic fundraising campaigns around regional strategy.
• Strategically analyze the success of project based and fundraising campaigns based on website and social media analytics; use data to adjust campaign scope and engagement across all our audiences.
• Support regional events and corporate partnerships.
• Support regional fundraising, communications and special events; may handle public speaking appearances, work at fundraising events or attend activities in the region.

Essential Qualifications :
• Inspiring action: proven experience creating content that has inspired individuals or communities to take action, in any form (activism, advocacy, volunteering, etc).
• Digital marketing + Strategic communications: Proven track record 5+ years in understanding audiences and owning user journeys. Ability to create content for messaging and promotion, digital advertising, data visualization and search engine optimization (SEO).
• Website & Online Platform Management: Skill in managing a website, developing and implementing email fundraising campaigns, and strategizing for social media platforms.
• Communications Efficacy Evaluation: Skill in tracking key performance indicators and making data-driven recommendations.
• Experience in managing and working with remote and diverse teams across time zones, regions and cultures.
• Writing Skills: Excellent command of the English language; Outstanding grammar and written communications skills, especially concise synopsis.
• Software/Platforms: Knowledge and skill in using Google Office Suite & Analytics, Adobe Design Suite, Canva or other CMS systems, and open source alternatives to these and other digital platforms. Knowledge of and skill in using Salesforce, Airtable or other relational database systems.
• Graphics and Web Design Experience.
• Experience as a content Manager.
• Time management/Organizational skills: Skill in working on multiple projects at a time under tight deadlines and in project management overall. Excellent attention to detail and ability to proactively design and execute your own area of work.
• Interpersonal/Communications: Energetic, enthusiastic, rapport-building people person with skill in building and sustaining relationships; Ability to work independently, and on a team, and successfully meet goals and objectives.
• Inclusion and digital ethics: Understanding of different access levels internationally, incl. those who don’t always have access to stable internet, up-to-date devices, desktops, time, funds, etc.
• Ways of working: Adaptability and responsiveness; a proven ability to respond to feedback and adjust approach for success.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

• Previous journalism experience.
• Experience with third-party social media software such as Buffer or Hootsuite.
• Prior experience in nonprofit environments.
• Media contacts in the humanitarian and development space.
• Spanish, French, or Portuguese fluency or working proficiency.
