JOB DESCRIPTION – HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Reports to: Land Hardware team lead

Division: Production

Department: Lake Operations

Grade: M1

Direct Reports: None  

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Heavy machinery operator will be driving the Tractor and Telehandler Operator and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of both tractor-trailers and telehandlers to transport Nets, feed, materials, and equipment across the site. The incumbent ensures timely delivery of items, supports internal logistics and handling operations, and maintains the machinery in optimal working condition. This role plays a key part in supporting operational flow, site safety, and equipment reliability.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Transportation and Delivery Operations
  • Operate a tractor with trailer to transport feed, equipment, and other goods between internal departments and external destinations as instructed.
  • Operate a telehandler to move materials/equipment from site compounds to designated workplace locations, such as loading bays, processing zones, or storage points.
  • Assist with the loading and offloading of items, ensuring correct handling and stacking to prevent damage and maintain load stability.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date delivery logs, including cargo type, quantity, time of dispatch and delivery, and recipient confirmation.
  • Plan routes and delivery schedules in coordination with supervisors to maximize time and fuel efficiency.
  1. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
  • Conduct pre-start, routine, and post-operation inspections on the tractor and telehandler, ensuring all components, attachments (e.g., plows, graders, forks etc), brakes, tires, and hydraulics are functioning properly.
  • Carry out basic maintenance, such as lubricating moving parts, checking fluid levels, cleaning air filters, and topping up fuel, oil, or coolant.
  • Ensure machines are always kept clean and presentable and parked in designated secure areas after use.
  • Identify and report any mechanical faults or defects immediately to the Engineering Manager or Line Manager for prompt resolution.
  • Keep maintenance checklists and inspection records as per the approved maintenance schedule.
  1. Safety, Security, and Compliance
  • Adhere strictly to company health, safety, and environmental regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), speed limits, and hazard reporting protocols.
  • Ensure all cargo is securely loaded, avoiding overloading or uneven loads that may cause instability.
  • Follow site security requirements when moving materials to or from restricted or high-risk areas.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings during equipment operation to prevent accidents and damage to property or personnel.
  • Assist in ensuring emergency preparedness, such as fire extinguisher placement in equipment, safe evacuation paths, and hazard signage.
  1. Communication and Coordination
  • Receive delivery and transport instructions from the Line Manager or dispatch team and seek clarification when necessary.
  • Communicate proactively regarding delays, route issues, fuel shortages, or mechanical breakdowns.
  • Work collaboratively with warehouse, operations, and engineering teams to ensure smooth coordination of logistics activities.
  1. Other Duties
  • Arrange for thorough cleaning of the tractor and telehandler as per the cleaning and disinfection schedule or after heavy-duty use.
  • Participate in any training or refresher sessions related to equipment handling, safety, or company procedures.
  • Undertake any additional responsibilities as may be assigned by the Line Manager or department heads in line with operational needs.
  1. Do any other tasks as instructed by the supervisor or line manager

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Valid license/class permitting the operation of tractors and heavy equipment (Telehandler Certification is an added advantage).
  • Minimum 2 years of proven experience in operating tractors and telehandlers or similar equipment.
  • Good knowledge of basic mechanical systems, routine maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong awareness of workplace health and safety practices.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to handle manual loading/unloading and long operation hours.
