Position Summary

The Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences will provide strategic academic leadership in teaching, research, innovation, policy engagement, and postgraduate supervision within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The position requires a distinguished scholar with expertise in International Relations and Diplomacy, Psychology, Criminology, Peace and Conflict Studies, Behavioural Sciences, Security Studies, or related disciplines. The successful candidate will contribute to the advancement of competency-based and socially responsive education, strengthen research and publication output, influence public policy, and support the University’s mission of producing Key Duties and Responsibilities Academic Leadership transformative leaders capable of addressing contemporary social, political, behavioural, and global challenges.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Leadership

  • Provide academic and intellectual leadership within the faculty and relevant disciplines.
  • Lead curriculum design, review, and alignment with emerging societal, geopolitical, behavioral, and security trends.
  • Promote competency-based, experiential, and research-informed teaching and learning approaches.
  • Mentor junior academic staff in teaching, research, publication, grant writing, and career progression.
  • Support quality assurance, accreditation, and academic standards compliance.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across the humanities, social sciences, governance, and public policy.

Teaching and Learning

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas such as:
    • International Relations and Diplomacy
    • Foreign Policy and Global Governance
    • Peace and Conflict Resolution
    • International Security and Strategic Studies
    • Political Psychology
    • Clinical and Counselling Psychology
    • Organisational and Behavioural Psychology
    • Criminology and Criminal Justice
    • Forensic Psychology
    • Sociology of Crime and Deviance
    • Human Rights and International Law
  • Supervise undergraduate projects, master’s dissertations, and doctoral research.
  • Integrate simulations, policy analysis, case studies, field engagement, and community-based learning into teaching.
  • Develop innovative teaching resources and digital learning materials.

Research and Innovation

  • Conduct high-impact research leading to publication in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals.
  • Establish and lead research clusters in diplomacy, governance, peacebuilding, psychology, behavioural sciences, criminology, or related fields.
  • Secure research grants, consultancy projects, and strategic partnerships.
  • Promote interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research addressing African and global social challenges.
  • Contribute to thought leadership, evidence-based policy development, and public discourse.
  • Organise conferences, policy dialogues, workshops, and public engagement initiatives.

Industry, Policy, and Community Engagement

  • Build strategic partnerships with government agencies, international organisations, NGOs, diplomatic missions, law enforcement institutions, and civil society.
  • Provide consultancy and advisory services in diplomacy, governance, mental health, behavioural sciences, conflict resolution, or criminal justice.
  • Support community outreach, advocacy, and social transformation initiatives.
  • Promote student employability through internships, field placements, and professional networking opportunities.
  • Contribute to national and regional development initiatives through research and policy engagement.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in Faculty, Senate, and University committees.
  • Contribute to institutional strategic planning and programme growth.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and academic advising.
  • Contribute to internationalisation, partnerships, and institutional visibility initiatives.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

Academic Qualifications

  • Earned PhD in International Relations, Diplomacy, Political Science, Psychology, Criminology, Security Studies, Sociology, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in relevant disciplines.
  • Professional certifications or memberships in relevant professional bodies will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • At least ten years of university teaching, research, and academic leadership experience.
  • Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral levels.
  • Strong record of publication in reputable indexed journals.
  • Demonstrated experience in attracting research funding and managing funded projects.
  • Experience in curriculum development, quality assurance, and competencybased education.
  • Evidence of engagement with policy institutions, government agencies, NGOs, or international organisations.
