JOB DETAILS:
OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
Provide care for critically ill or unstable patients comfortable in the critical care unit and be comfortable with a wide variety of technology and its uses in the critical care setting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
• Registered with the Ugandan Nurses and Midwives Council & holds current practicing licence for Nursing.
• One year working experience as a nurse, experience in the ICU (desirable).
• Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent verbal and written skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with all the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives.
• Competent knowledge and skills with in critical care.

GENERAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
• To plan, provide and evaluate skilled evidence based care for the critically ill patient.
• Perform all nursing duties in accordance with the UNMC RN levels while adhering to all IHK policies & procedures
• To promote practice development within Critical Care.
• Liaise with MDT members in patient assessment, planning, implement and evaluating care to ensure quality care.
• Communicating effectively to patients/clients and their relatives and friends.
• Role modelling excellence in practice, sharing a broad base of clinical nursing knowledge and contributing to the development and maintenance of standards of practice within IHK/IMC.
• Responsible for effective shift handovers ensuring relevant detail is communicated and identifies and challenges any unprofessional or subjective comments made about patients.
• Under guidance of Team Leader, to progress towards performance of development reviews.
• Reporting incidents/ accidents/ complaints to the nurse in charge. Be familiar with the incident report form and complete the process
• Act in a supportive role to the Senior Staff nurse/in charge and to accept delegated responsibilities.
• Contribute to an active learning environment by teaching, supervising and facilitating colleagues.
• Involve in complex patient ‘case conferences’ when discussing future treatments for patients which could involve ‘withdrawal of treatment’ in situations of poor prognosis.
• Promoting patient privacy and dignity and respecting their culture and beliefs.
• Accurate recording of all interventions carried out on patient to ensure continuity of care
• Operate medical equipments such as suctioning, oxygen administration, ECG etc
• Safe administration of drugs following the IHK policy on drug administration.
• Contribute in establishing and maintaining standards of practice as per IHK
• Requirements and ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Planning and prioritise workload on daily basis in conjunction with the team leader.
• Provide direct patient care, administering treatment as prescribed and taking vital signs.
• Assess, plan implement and evaluate individualised evidence based care in consultation with the MDT whilst maintaining effective communication with shift Coordinator.
• Record and report symptoms and changes in patients’ conditions and vital signs
• Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records by documenting as per IHK standards
• Provide information to patient relatives on patients’ condition and plan of care.
• Directly work with the in house Doctor and ensure that patient has been reviewed and new instructions promptly followed.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving when dealing with complex situations occurring on regular basis.
• Ensure individual dietary needs are met.
• Takes into account religious beliefs/cultural wishes in life and death.
• Wear appropriate & accepted uniform as per IHK nurses uniform policy
• Ensure team work and complete assigned tasks and seek for help from your seniors
• To ensure delivery of quality care to clients.
• To be punctual and manage assigned work load.
• Dispose waste as per the given guidelines – infection control
• Attend scheduled unit CMEs as per the unit standard
