About the Role
Reporting to the Claims/Care Manager, the Underwriter – Medical role will support the effective underwriting of medical insurance risks in line with company policies, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite. The role involves assessing proposals, determining appropriate terms and pricing, and ensuring accurate policy issuance. The Underwriter – Medical will support portfolio profitability through sound risk evaluation, prudent decision‑making, and continuous review of underwriting standards, while contributing to process improvements, service excellence, and strong collaboration with claims, sales, and medical service providers.
PURPOSE:
To assess, evaluate, and underwrite medical insurance risks, determine coverage terms in line with company policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements, ensuring accurate risk selection, pricing, and policy issuance that safeguard the company’s profitability and competitiveness.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Risk Assessment & Underwriting
- Review medical insurance applications, proposals, and supporting documents.
- Evaluate medical histories, lifestyle, reports, and risk profiles to determine eligibility and coverage terms.
- Classify risks and make underwriting decisions in line with company policies and reinsurance requirements.
- Recommend appropriate premiums, exclusions, or loadings based on risk assessments.
- Ensuring prudent vetting of the proposed risks and preparation of competitive quotations for clients on both New and Renewal business
- Responsible for analyzing, advice and implement risk improvement measures for all underwritten risks
- Ensuring that all risks underwritten fit within the company’s risk appetite guidelines.
- Support in preparation of Bidding quotations /documents
- Recommend appropriate coverage terms or decline applications where risk is excessive.
Policy Documentation & Processing
- Prepare and issue quotations, policy documents, endorsements, and renewal terms.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of underwriting documentation.
- Maintain updated underwriting records in the system.
- Management of renewals, sharing renewal quotes one month to policy expiry.
- Preparing and sharing all Quotations/proposal with agents, brokers and direct clients.
- Follow-up on payments and controlling the debt ageing within policy limits.
- Ordering and managing the distribution of medical cards with in two working days from receipt of instructions.
Compliance & Guidelines
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with internal underwriting guidelines, insurance laws, and regulatory frameworks.
- Implement and adhere to risk acceptance limits and authority levels.
- Report exceptions and seek approvals where necessary.
Stakeholder Engagement & Customer Support
- Work closely with sales, claims, brokers, agents, and clients to clarify underwriting requirements.
- Provide technical support and guidance to intermediaries and sales teams on medical underwriting matters.
- Resolve underwriting-related queries in a timely and professional manner.
- Support training initiatives for staff on medical underwriting procedures.
- Attending to inquiries from clients and Intermediaries. Responding to general client’s complaint on service.
- Offer a high level of customer care service while interacting with clients.
Medical Liaison & Consultation
- Collaborate with medical practitioners to interpret reports and laboratory results.
- Seek additional medical information where required to support underwriting decisions.
- Engage with reinsurers for facultative underwriting support on complex/high-value cases.
Monitoring, Compliance & Reporting
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify trends, and highlight high-risk patterns.
- Provide periodic underwriting reports and recommend adjustments to policies or processes.
- Contribute to product development by sharing market intelligence and risk trends.
- Follow-up on payments and controlling the debt ageing within policy limits.
- Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation.
Team & Departmental Support
- Work closely with claims, actuarial, and reinsurance teams to ensure consistent risk management.
- Support the department in training new staff or interns on medical underwriting processes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency.
Who We’re Looking For
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Actuarial Science or a related field.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Underwriting.
