Job Summary:
This Credit Manager is responsible for ensuring the overall performance of the private sector portfolio meets company expectations. This entails a comprehensive risk assessment of new and renewal credit applications using a range of criteria including but not limited to the applicant’s business and financial records, credit history, bank records, tax returns and other credit related data, stress-tested in the context of the operating landscape (economic, social, political, technological, regulatory and environmental) and making recommendations on the nature, structure and terms of the loan to ensure Bayport’s interests are protected.
The job holder is also responsible for monitoring portfolio performance, developing strategies to address any shortcomings, managing stakeholder relationships to ensure timely repayments and a healthy portfolio. He/she will work closely with the portfolio sales team to ensure credit applications meet the required criteria.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Credit Appraisal
- Lead comprehensive financial analysis including cash flow forecasting, Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA), Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR), free cash flow, leverage, sensitivity, and scenario testing.
- Develop and present detailed credit proposals, articulating key risks, mitigants, and covenant structures.
- Structure facilities with a focus on sustainability, repayment capacity, and alignment to Risk Asset Acceptance Criteria (RAAC).
- Provide sector benchmarking and peer comparison for large borrowers across the target Market.
Portfolio Monitoring & Risk Management
- Track performance of large-ticket exposures and escalate early warning signals promptly.
- Conduct stress testing at borrower and portfolio level to assess resilience to shocks.
- Evaluate and monitor the private sector portfolio’s performance, identify potential problem facilities, and develop strategies to mitigate risk.
- Recommend proactive restructuring, recovery, or risk mitigation strategies when necessary.
Stakeholder Management, Engagement & Communication
- Present and defend complex credit recommendations with clarity and conviction at senior-level Credit Committees.
- Effective communication with various accounts to ensure a healthy and positive business relationship.
- Engage with Relationship Managers, auditors, valuers, and regulators to ensure due diligence is robust and complete.
- Draft concise, well-structured reports and executive summaries for ARC, Board-level and regulatory submissions.
Governance & Policy Contribution
- Contribute to development of private sector-specific RAAC and review of portfolio policies.
- Ensure strict adherence to documentation, compliance, and audit trails.
- Mentor junior analysts, instilling a culture of discipline, accountability, and analytical rigor.
Training and capacity building
- Train and develop portfolio sales executives on credit administration, origination, due diligence, documentation, and compliance guidelines.
- Provide training to Quality Control teams and other credit support staff on Private sector, lending best practices.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in credit management or related fields.
- Knowledge of commercial and retail loan underwriting, documentation, credit administration, and compliance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop a team of credit officers.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills to develop and deliver training programs, manage reports, and communicate effectively with other departments and stakeholders.
- Experience in developing and maintaining internal controls and risk management systems.
- A thorough knowledge of Micro-Finance products and services, market trends, and regulatory requirements.
