JOB SUMMARY

The Driver contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by ensuring safe transportation of authorized goods and passengers. . Ensuring its technical and safety conditions and respecting the country's traffic rules.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate vehicle according to MTI fleet management policies and Uganda road regulations to ensure the safety and security of passengers (patients, staff, volunteers, guests)
  • In emergency cases, support the nurse in administering first aid and additional interventions that support patient health
  • Identify maintenance needs and immediately alert supervisor of any conditions of concern before transporting passengers
  • Transport the vehicle to appointed vendor facilities for approved maintenance and repairs to be completed (e.g. oil change, washing bay, etc.)
  • Record all movements in the vehicle logbook and submit weekly inspection reports as per schedule
  • Ensure the vehicle always has sufficient fuel
  • Ensure passengers use appropriate safety restraints while vehicle is in motion
  • Ensure correct loading and unloading of vehicle, verify status of delivered goods against required documents, submit documents to receiver of goods and return completed documents to the Operations department
  • Ensure all passengers have necessary papers in order before travelling
  • Keep vehicle clean and free of debris
  • Identifies operational, security, environmental, financial fleet risks and reports them to the supervisor timely.
  • In case of accidents and emergencies, follow MTI medical emergency procedures and evacuate passengers according to policy; complete written accident report
  • Ensure that vehicle and driver documents are in the vehicle as required are up to date
  • Participate in safety and defensive driving trainings
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • O Level Certificate of Education is required
  • Possession of a valid driving Licence for all relevant classes (Classes A1, B, C1 and D1)
  • Certification in defensive driving from a recognized institution is required
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR is required

Preferred:

  • Certification in vehicle mechanics and maintenance is an added advantage

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of heavy vehicle driving in Uganda is required
  • Clean driving record is required

Preferred:

  • Experience driving an ambulance and working with an international NGO is an added advantage

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE

  • In-depth knowledge of road safety regulations and defensive driving techniques
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics and maintenance; First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian standards, donors, systems and principles, e.g., Sphere, CHS, Red Cross Code of Conduct etc.
  • A basic understanding of health systems.

SKILLS

  • Excellent defensive driving skills
  • Skilled in administering First Aid and CPR
  • Skilled in identifying maintenance issues

ABILITIES

  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations to prioritize patient care
  • Physically fit and able to lift heavy stuff when loading vehicles
  • Ability to keep detailed records and write reports
  • Ability to follow procedures in response to accidents or emergency situations
  • Ability to support MTI Calling and adhere to the MTI Code of Conduct
  • Professional, courteous, punctual
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Travel requirements of up to 100%
