Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID) is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Kampala, founded in 2007 by young Congolese refugees living in Uganda.
The mission of YARID is to empower refugees, orphans, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) around Africa to overcome the burdens of deprivation and vulnerability to become healthy, educated, self-sustaining, and contributing members of society.
YARID unites urban refugees through avenues like sports, English classes, and vocational skills training in order to address social issues like ethnic conflicts, unemployment, public health, and lack of access to education. We also have a presence in settlement locations like Nakivale, Kyaka and Palabek. YARID serves Refugees that mainly come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia, including the host community.
About the RISE Project
Building upon YARID’s commitment to empowering refugees, with funding from European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), we are proud to partner with our lead, Save the Children (SCI) and other consortium members on the RISE project, specifically in Nakivale settlement. RISE initiative aims to achieve increased access, retention, and improved learning outcomes for out-of-school children, newly arrived children, and children at risk of dropout in the Nakivale, Rwamwanja, and Kyangwali refugee settlements. This includes newly arrived refugees, unaccompanied and separated children, and children facing conflict-related vulnerabilities.
Job Overview/Summary
The Classroom Teacher will provide quality primary education to children in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, ensuring learning is inclusive, child-centred, and responsive to the needs of vulnerable children. The teacher will support the RISE project’s goal of improving access, retention, and learning outcomes.
Responsibilities or duties
- Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans aligned with the approved national curriculum.
- Select or develop learning and teaching materials/aids appropriate to the lessons.
- Deliver lessons according to the timetable.
- Conduct remedial work or extra teaching for learners who are lagging.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment that is responsive to the diverse needs of refugee children.
- Effectively manage classroom behaviour and dynamics, promoting a culture of respect and cooperation among students.
- Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including classwork, assignments, and exams.
- Provide individualised support and tailored instruction to students with diverse learning needs and abilities.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and academic performance.
- Do pupil studies, keep profiles for individual learners.
- Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers to provide updates on student progress and discuss any concerns.
- Facilitate positive relationships with community members to support the educational journey of beneficiary children.
- Encourage parental involvement in school activities and their child's education.
- Work closely with other teachers, school administrators, and RISE project staff to coordinate efforts and share best practices.
- Actively participate in professional development workshops and training sessions to enhance teaching skills and methodologies.
- Attend staff meetings, departmental/subject meetings.
- Work with school leadership and other teachers to improve instruction.
- Follow Ministry of Education and Science (MoES) guidelines, regulations, and policies (e.g., teacher registration/licensing).
- Carry out any additional tasks as expected by the line manager.
- Ensure all classroom and teaching practices adhere to child protection best practices.
- Identify and report any child protection concerns to the appropriate authority.
- Keep and maintain class and school records (attendance, inventory, registers).
- Report on learner achievement and submit required reports.
- Follow directives from district or ministry officials.
- Participate in appraisal/performance review processes as required.
- Recording keeping on the well-being of learners
- Update the line supervisor and or the field officers of any unforeseen situations on the learner(s), including all safeguarding and health-related matters.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- Grade III Certificate in Teaching (or equivalent) required.
- A diploma or degree in Primary Education is an advantage.
- Registration Certificate from the Ministry of Education and Sports is an asset.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of French, Swahili, or local languages (e.g. Luganda, Kinyarwanda) is a plus.
- Strong classroom management and inclusive teaching skills.
- Understanding of child-centred pedagogy and differentiated instruction.
- Commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
- Candidates with personal displacement or refugee experience are encouraged to apply.
- Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
