JOB REF: LEGAL/EQBUL 03/2021
Reports to: Executive Director - Banking Operations .

JOB PURPOSE:
The job holder of this position is responsible for developing and supervising the implementation of strategic activities of the legal department, supporting all departments, management. and the Board with legal advice upon consultation, and ensuring that the bank is legally compliant with the laws of Uganda.

KEY RESULT AREAS:
• Formulate strategies that will enable the legal department to effectively support other units of the Bank and all key stakeholders.
• Advise management on the laws governing financial institutions in Uganda and ensure that the Bank's policies are compliant with the said legal framework.
• Monitor changes in legislation enacted by parliament, regulations, and guidelines issued by the Central Bank. and bills going through parliament which will have a direct impact on the Bank's business operations.
• Lead the identification of external legal services to be engaged by the Bank and oversee their delivery in line with the Bank's goals and objectives.
• Represent the Bank in civil litigation cases both for and against. These will include but not be limited to credit and non—credit litigation.
• Provide oversight on transactions of a legal nature entered or intended to be entered into by the Bank, safeguard the Banks best interest. and minimize legal risk.
• Supervise and manage the performance and development of staff in the Legal Department in line with the Bank's policies and procedures.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Bachelor's Degree in Law from a recognized University.
• Admission to the bar as an attorney or advocate.
• Minimum of 8 years working experience in a financial, commercial, or legal advisory institution.
• Strong legal drafting. problem-solving, negotiation, organizational and planning skills with the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
• Ability to operate in a high performance-driven organization.
• Great communication and interpersonal skills.
