JOB DETAILS:

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a Research Technician to support ClP’s sweet potato breeding work in Uganda.
The Center: CIP is a not-tor-profit international agricultural research organization supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) with a global mandate to conduct research on genetic resources of potatoes, sweet potato, and other Andean roots and tubers, crop genetic enhancement and improvement, integrated crop management and sustainable management of natural resources.

The Position: The Technician, will work on the Sweetpotato Action tor Security and Heath in Africa (SASHA) and will be based at the CIP Kampala Office with Namulonge as the main field station. The technician will work underthe supervision of the Assistant Sweet potato BreederProject Leader, in collaboration with the national program and other partners on the SASHA project.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Screen house management, conduct laboratory and field experiments
  • Collect, analyze and interpret research trial data
  • Write reports and related documents.
    Selection Criteria:
  • BSc in Agriculture or Biological Sciences or Genetics or Molecular breeding with hands on experience in tissue culture, screenhouse management, NIRS, and at least one year’s experience gained from a reputable research institution or university
  • good skills in experimental designs, data collection, analysis, interpretation and report writing
  • Good knowledge and practical background on root and tuber crops will be an advantage. 
  • Excellent oral, written communications, and problem solving ability;
  •  Excellent computer skills
  •  Accuracy and attention to detail;
  •  Cross cultural sensitivity.
  •  Strong e-mail communication skills, ability to write in a manner sensitive to cultural differences, and provide clarity to staff where English is not the primary working language of the project
  • Ability to be a team player in a busy environment, often with tight deadlines
  • A Uganda citizen.
    Conditions:

This position is local thus limited to Ugandan nationals and permanent residents. The employment contract will be for a five-month term with (with a three months’ probation period) possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. The successful candidate will receive a compensation package comparable with similar organizations and in line with the candidates qualification and experience.
