On behalf of Our client in the FMCG sector, we are looking for competent and experienced Transport and Distribution Manager to be based in Kampala
Reports To: Plant Manager.
Job Summary: The Transport and Distribution Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the efficient transportation and distribution of goods from our manufacturing facilities to customers and distribution centers. This role is critical in ensuring timely delivery, cost-effective logistics, and seamless coordination across our supply chain network.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and publish Daily inbound and outbound transport plans using the Transport Management System.
- Handle transport costs to be within budget and deliver operational savings. Bring innovative thinking into the company’s transport operations to deliver on cost and service in a safe manner. (Fuel, Maintenance, etc.)
- Provide experienced transport knowledge understanding market dynamics to ensure credibility of logistics.
- Plan and lead transport operations to ensure operation efficiencies (TAT, Truck utilization, route optimization) and customer service (CFR, OTIFNE and returns).
- Develop and implement safety, CARM, SFIPP and all company’s controls plus government regulations in the transport operations of the market.
- Understanding of the Transportation management system (TMS) and how it operates. Using this system to optimize our transport operation to drive cost and efficiency.
- People Management in aspects of Performance Management, Disciplinary Management & Compliance to The Time Attendance Shift Patterns for the Transport function.
- Oversee the Control Room for Fleet Tracking and ensure that the business attains value through ensuring timely reporting of all vehicle movements and breaches identified within 48 hours of occurrence. Ensure the Fleet Trackers continuously monitor all the vehicles to identify any violations and guide the drivers on the internal driving policies e.g., night driving.
- Set distribution goals and plan and manage distribution operations to achieve the set goals.
- Identify resources, perform workload assignments and provide assistances when required.
- Conduct training for team members as needed.
- Oversee daily distribution routes and improve route plans to ensure timely deliveries.
- Address customer queries and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Work with warehouse and transportation staff to ensure timely and accurate deliveries.
- Perform cost negotiations with suppliers to reduce fleet maintenance costs which lead to reduce in cost per case.
- Ensure that company transport vehicles are maintained in good working conditions. (Asset Care).
- Plan and schedule deliveries to meet customer needs.
- Follow OTIF (ON TIME AND IN FULL DELIVERY).
- Monitoring TAT (TRUCKS TURNAROUND TIME).
- Assist in inventory management activities including receiving, storing, rotating in the department storage locations.
- Focus on the timely delivery of goods and prevention of loss (such as ensuring delivery of perishable goods without spoilage) through distribution channels.
- Overseeing the delivery, loading, and unloading products and goods, and ensuring they are safely transported.
- To coordinate with different departments to identify and understand the distribution needs, set goals and guidelines, manage budgets and schedules, delegate tasks among staff, develop strategies to optimize operations, and present reports to the executives and shareholders.
- Overhaul performance review process and correct deficiencies to regain compliance with policy and requirements.
- Support employee training and development programs.
- Support and ensure compliance of OHSE at work.
- Ensure Fleet legal position: (Insurance, valid permits, legal loading capacity).
- Ensure that action is taken on all daily submitted speed violations in line with the Internal Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure that all fleet faults brought to your attention are fixed on time to ensure safety of employees and company property.
- Ensure that the Dispatch Manager complies to the daily weighbridge verification.
- Ensure adequate trainings are conducted to enable the drivers be acquainted with all Traffic regulations e.g., speed limits and also on safety guidelines while doing their work.

- Perform any other duties as maybe assigned by the immediate line manager.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
- A minimum of a Bachelor`s degree in Transport & Distribution or any relevant discipline from a reputable institution.
- Possession of a Master`s degree in Business Administration will be an added advantage.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role in a busy environment preferably out bound logistics, manufacturing or distribution.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office-Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Knowledge of office management and procedures.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Planning and documentation skills.
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
